Hadley (Michigan)

Hadley was born August 14, 2006, two days late and as healthy as could be (and as cute as can be)! At about 6 weeks of age Hadley developed what we thought was colic. She screamed every night for hours but she was totally fine during the day. At this time I noticed some occassional light stools. At her 2 month well baby visit the doctor ordered labs because of the light stools and she thought Hadley looked jaundiced. At that WELL baby visit I learned that Hadley had a life threatening disease, they didn’t diagnose her until the following week. She was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia and she underwent the Kasai procedure. The Kasai procedure takes a piece of her intestines and ‘hooks’ it up to the liver to try to establish bile flow. Her surgery took 8 1/2 hours. She did great! Her bilirubin went down and the procedure was a success…or so we thought. 3 months later Hadley turned yellow and it was determined that her Kasai was not working. The doctors went back in and did a revision to the original surgery. That still didn’t work so they went back in about a week later for one ‘last ditch effort’ before transplant. It worked! Hadley is now a happy, healthy 4 year old! She loves her big brother and best friend Jackson and her baby sister Nola Belle. Hadley is happiest when she is coloring or making an art project. I look at Hadley with amazement, love, and respect for all that she has gone through (and all that she will still have to go through) in life. Hadley is truly our hero, she is one amazing little girl.
